From the average range of postcards and coffee table books, one gets the impression that the centre of Amsterdam and especially the Red Light District, is usually photographed during the evening hours, a time when this (in)famous part of the city truly comes to life.
I was curious to see how this part of Amsterdam looks when it is waking up, after a busy night, when the first rays of the sun hit the streets.
Here is a glimpse of the empty, quiet streets of the Red Light District in Amsterdam just after sunrise, without all the flashy neon lights, noise and tourists…
Each day is a little life: every waking and rising a little birth, every fresh morning a little youth, every going to rest and sleep a little death.

Oh, so if you were up early taking pics in the Red Light District, you obviously didn’t do anything the night before or you would have been going to bed right about then. 😉 These are really nice images. It’s hard to believe such a quaint part of town during the day gets so wild at night.
Those are beautiful pics. I’ve always wanted to visit the Red Light District but never even considered hanging out there in the daytime. After seeing your shots, I want to now.
Based on your pics – and what I know about the Red Light District at night – I’d say the town has a split personality. Beautifully done. I’d love to have these framed for my Sun room.
Heel goed gedaan en boeiend!
Van Gogh art museum, Anne Frank’s hiding room, Red Light District, cheeky weed cafe’s … veryyyyyyy excited for Amsterdam
Hello! Interesting article! I came here from Google plus. Very, very good photography!
I lived in Amsterdam for 5 years but I have never seen it like you have projected. Awesome job!
I so much love this post! Especially the picture of the statue of Majoor Bosshardt is truly excellent and captures exactly what this wonderful woman’s life was all about.
Greetings from Zwolle <3
